Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's departure the family of Ford, they were taken care of by her grandmother, mom, and godparents. She suffered from an anxiety disorder caused by word associations as a young toddler. Ford became attracted to acting in her teenage years and joined the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time however, Ford realised that it wasn't the ideal location for her. Ford decided to apply instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth attempt. A classmate of hers included Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut, appearing on Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in the year 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. She also worked regularly in theatres, before eventually joining in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was recognized as a stand-up comedian that became part of her repertoire in 1996.
